Preparing for School Street Events

Ahead of our upcoming road closure days on Tuesday 14 and Wednesday 15 November 2023, where roads leading up to WHGS (Spring Bridge Road, Waltham Road, Highbury Road and Gildridge Road) will be closed to motor vehicles between 8.00am-9.00am and 2.30pm-3:30pm, new banners have now been displayed reminding parents, carers, staff and our local residents to switch off their engines whilst waiting outside WHGS.

Black History Month

The month of October was a great one for WHGS, as different activities took place across the whole school for Black History Month.  

Bridgewater Hall Music Concert

On Friday 20 October, GCSE Music students, alongside deserving Year 9 musicians, went to listen to the Hallé Orchestra at the Bridgewater Hall. Entitled, the 'Orchestra through the Ages', students learnt about the  Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th Century orchestra and heard pieces from all these eras.

Henshaws Visit

On Tuesday 10 October, we welcomed friends from Henshaws who were serenaded by Yousef, a Year 11 GCSE Music student on the piano, as well as Year 12 L3 BTEC Performance students.

Paper Aeroplane House Competition

The annual Paper Aeroplane House Competition was held on Thursday 19 October. Over fifty staff and students turned out for their Houses to see who could fly their paper aeroplanes the furthest.

Sixth Form Football

On Thursday 19 October, the Year 12 boys played the Year 13 boys at football.

The afternoon air was fresh, as summer descended into autumn, the sun setting over the Donner building, bringing a chill to the immense crowd that had gathered at the WHGS arena, in anticipation of the gladiatorial game that was about to begin.

Sixth Form Students Attend BAAS Conference

On Friday 13 October, Sixth Form students from across our History and Politics courses attended a Conference hosted by the British Association of American Studies (BAAS) and the University of Manchester.

Y11 GCSE Geography Field Trip

Over three days (Monday 9 October to Wednesday 11 October), our Year 11 Geography students took their GCSE field trip to Blackpool to study the impacts of tourism and coastal engineering in the area.

Manchester Schools Boys Cricket Final

In the Summer of 2023, we reached the Final of the Manchester Schools Year 10 Cricket Tournament.  To get to the finals, the team played some great cricket and we beat the likes of Cedar Mount, St Bedes, Abraham Moss and Parrswood. 

Primary Golf Taster Sessions

On Wednesday 20 and Thursday 21 September, children in the Primary Phase participated in a Golf Taster session. This was arranged to coincide with the Solheim and Ryder Cup, which is when international golf players from Europe take on their American counterparts to win a trophy for a two year period.

Year 7 Open Evening

Despite it being a particularly chilly evening, it was fantastic to see so many parents and enthusiastic students join us for our annual Open Evening last week; it is always a pleasure to welcome members of the local community to William Hulme’s Grammar School and our visitors were able to see what makes WHGS such a superb place to study.

Year 6 Tag Rugby Inspire Event

On Monday 25 September, a squad of Year 6 children attended the TeamMcr Inspire Tag Rugby event held at school and supported by our Year 8 Leaders.

Four schools attended the event and, after playing, rated each other based on the School Games Values, which are Passion, Determination, Self Belief, Honesty, Teamwork and Respect.

Year 6 Davis Cup Trip

A group of Year 6 children recently attended the Davis Cup match between Great Britain and Australia at the AO Arena. They were able to see leading British players, Jack Draper, Andy Murray, Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans, who were all part of the squad for the event.

Youth Mental Health Day 2023

Mental Health concerns for young people have multiplied in recent times.  Youth Mental Health Day, an awareness day run by teenage mental health charity stem4, is here to provide hope and positivity.
