On Thursday 20 April 2023, we celebrated Stephen Lawrence Day at WHGS. The day began with a heart-warming assembly delivered by Ruth Ibegbuna (Founder of RECLAIM, Rekindle and The Roots Programme) about Stephen’s life.
Cultural flags representing Caribbean islands were placed around the school environment, in honour of Stephen’s background. We also had a lunch time Caribbean menu: Jerk Burgers and Sweet Potato Fries, Jerk Chicken & Rice and Peas, Sweet Potato Curry and, for dessert, Coconut Cake and Carrot Cake.
A Paper Tower Competition (connected to Stephen’s dream of becoming an architect) was launched during PSHE lessons, Stephen’s graphics were displayed on our TV screens and badges designed by our Sixth Form students were sold to raise funds to support local and national youth charities. We raised £178 from the badge sales.
- Badge 1: (designed by Zionne and Katie) was of the symbolic black power fist which represents justice, community and ending racism.
- Badge 2: (commissioned by Eden-Haya and designed by Jamal) was to represent the beauty and power of blackness. This badge also represents black women / women of colour who despite being one of the most marginalised groups in society (and the world) have been the trail blazers for positive change.
