On Tuesday 16 May, our Year 10 GCSE Food & Nutrition students went on a trip to the Unicorn Grocery in Chorlton.
As it was a lovely afternoon, the students were taken up to the roof terrace, where they had a talk from two of the shop colleagues about the history of the shop and its ethos. They talked about the social, moral and environmental issues regarding food production and shopping and also discussed organic produce, sustainability, fair trade, seasonality and the locally grown produce on sale in the shop.
The students had the opportunity to taste different varieties of apples not found in the large supermarkets and compare the flavours and textures.
We then went downstairs and had a look around the shop to see the different produce on sale and do some of our own shopping.
