Tuesday 31 October 2023
On Tuesday 31 October, a group of our Year 11 students attended “The Skills for Success” day on their Gateways visit to the University of Manchester.
The group participated in various activities, along with eight other schools. The “Skills for Success” day focused on improving learners’ awareness of University learning styles through the completion of group research enquiries into topical issues.
Students worked with the other schools and developed communication and group-work skills, learning from each other’s experience. This visit provided students with effective revision and study skills, to support them as they sit their GCSE exams. Support was also provided on transitioning into Post-16 education, and how to plan and manage their time as they become more independent learners.
The University Ambassadors gave information and advice on how to build transferable skills, and why extra-curricular activities are important. Students were introduced to the Access Programmes provided by the University of Manchester, which could support them in getting into university after they’ve completed the Gateways Programme.
The aim of the day was to develop reflective students who are aware of the process required to complete a task and were able to identify areas for improvement. All the students were presented with certificates. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the experience, with one of the students commenting “I thoroughly enjoyed today. I found the whole day enjoyable and informative and I am sure that the skills I have learnt and developed will help me with my GCSEs, as well as at college and, hopefully, at university”.
